The other activity that I have started getting into is not only about relieving stress but also increases my fitness and that is trail running. Growing up, I would only run roads because we didn't have any trails in my hometown. The monotony of running on pavement with only passing cars and houses occupying your landscape made running unenjoyable. Now with Pisgah National Forest nearly in my backyard and Dupont State Forest just down the road, I have limitless options for trails to run.
This morning while running, I realized that during a run, my mind is allowed to wander and actually relax because it is only having to watch out for those sneaky tree roots. The surrounds are also ever changing and quite beautiful. I have seen many different types of plants, animals, and terrain while running. The terrain around here varies depending on the section of forest or trail I am running. Sometimes I am going up steep hillsides, others I am running along a river surrounded by plants and animals. I have also encountered many different animals while running, Squirrels, rabbits, small birds, turkey, geese, and the occasional dog when other users are nearby. The one animal I hope I don't encounter would be a bear. The variety and beauty keeps every run interesting and enjoyable. Sometimes, I even stop running just to take in the beauty that is surrounding me. This morning I stopped to enjoy a mountain laurel that was beginning to bloom. While running at Dupont the other day, I had to stop and enjoy a waterfall that I had never seen before.
The past few weeks, I have had to find ways to stay active since climbing is not the best option for me right now. I somehow managed to injure a finger bad enough that I am staying off of it except for work. This has left running as a way to get moving outside which is something I always love doing. Hopefully soon, I will be able to get back to climbing hard and enjoying the vertical terrain that I am surrounded by. Keep a look out for some upcoming posts on my favorite climbing locations in North Carolina.
