About the Course
Mount Shuksan, which lies inside the North Cascade National Park, only a few miles from Mount Baker. Shuksan is easily seen from the Baker Ski Area in the winter and locations such as Artist Point and Baker Lake in the summer. Mount Shuksan requires being able to move over not just glaciers but also rock as the summit is at the top of a rock pyramid that seems to emerge out of the surrounding glaciers.
Mount Shuksan has many route of varying difficulty with three routes being the most common; the Sulphide Glacier, Fisher Chimneys, and The North Face.
The Sulphide Glacier is probably the easiest route on the mountain. It is primarily easy glacial walking with 4th class climbing up to the summit. If you want more of a climbing challenge, the Southeast hosts amazing rock climbing up to the summit. This is best done as a 3 day climb.
The Fisher Chimneys has a little bit of everything for climbers. With a beautiful approach hike, a camping area protected by a scramble up the chimneys, snow and ice climbing, and at times tricky glacier travel it is never a boring time. This is the perfect route for the climber who wants to do it all.
The North Face is more remote than the other routes. It hosts a climb up a large snow and glacial field with up to AI2-3 climbing. Topping out the route places you at the base of the east side of the summit pyramid. You can climb up from here or traverse around to the Southeast Ridge via the Crystal Glacier.
